Morgan Asset Management has forecast a 10% annual compounded return for Bitcoin over the next decade, putting the cryptocurrency ahead of its projections for US stocks, bonds and gold. Yet the bank’s optimistic return assumption comes with a significant caveat: Bitcoin’s volatility remains too high for the firm to include it in its main portfolio-allocation models.

Published on October 19 as part of its 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions, JPMorgan Asset Management’s report marks the first time the firm has assigned Bitcoin a dedicated long-term return forecast. The annual report evaluates expected performance across more than 200 asset classes to help institutional investors make strategic allocation decisions over a 10- to 15-year horizon.

According to CoinDesk’s report, the bank’s base-case assumption puts Bitcoin’s annualized return at 10%, compared with 7.5% for US large-cap equities, 7.7% for US small-cap stocks and 5.5% for gold. US bonds are projected to return between 5.6% and 6.6% annually.

The figures position Bitcoin as the strongest performer among these major asset classes in JPMorgan’s model. However, they represent long-term assumptions rather than a price target or a prediction that Bitcoin will rise every year.

JPMorgan’s model considers three possible outcomes for Bitcoin over the coming decade. Its base case projects annualized returns of 10%, while the bullish scenario anticipates 17% annual gains. The bearish scenario, by contrast, projects annual losses of 9.7%.

This range highlights the uncertainty surrounding Bitcoin’s long-term performance. Even though the base case exceeds expected returns for traditional assets, the bearish scenario suggests that investors could experience substantial losses if market conditions deteriorate.

The distinction between annualized returns and annual price movements is also important. A 10% compounded annual return does not mean Bitcoin will gain 10% every year. The asset could experience severe drawdowns before recovering, and its eventual performance will depend on adoption, liquidity, regulation and broader financial conditions.

JPMorgan estimates Bitcoin’s annualized volatility at approximately 55%, substantially higher than the expected volatility of traditional investments. For comparison, the bank’s model places US large-cap equity volatility at around 18% and gold volatility at approximately 17.2%.

That difference matters for institutional investors managing portfolios against specific risk limits. An asset with higher expected returns may still be unattractive if its price swings make overall portfolio risk difficult to control.

JPMorgan therefore has not incorporated Bitcoin into its main covariance matrices, which model how different assets move in relation to one another. Instead, the firm has introduced a separate, smaller model covering Bitcoin alongside selected assets.

The bank also stops short of recommending Bitcoin as a reliable portfolio diversifier. Its researchers describe the cryptocurrency as a speculative asset and a potential hedge against monetary easing, while warning that its correlations with other investments remain unstable.

Despite these reservations, JPMorgan acknowledges that the infrastructure surrounding digital assets has developed significantly. Exchange-traded funds, futures markets, options, institutional custody and financing services have made it easier for professional investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin.

The report’s inclusion of Bitcoin reflects that evolution. Rather than treating the cryptocurrency as outside the scope of long-term asset allocation, JPMorgan is beginning to evaluate its expected returns using a dedicated framework.

Still, recognition is not the same as endorsement. The bank’s model does not establish that Bitcoin deserves a place in every portfolio, nor does it suggest that investors should replace equities, bonds or gold with cryptocurrency.

The 10% return assumption provides a new reference point for institutional discussions about Bitcoin’s long-term potential. It also highlights the growing competition between digital assets and traditional investments for capital.

However, the forecast should be interpreted alongside the bank’s risk estimates, not in isolation. Bitcoin’s projected outperformance depends on assumptions that may change as market structure, regulation and investor behavior evolve.

For now, JPMorgan’s message is two-sided: Bitcoin has earned a place in long-term return analysis, but its volatility still limits its role in conventional portfolio construction. Whether future improvements in liquidity, regulation and market stability eventually change that assessment will be one of the key questions for institutional crypto adoption over the next decade.

J.P.
