Instead, preliminary findings suggest that attackers compromised the infrastructure used to authorize transactions, turning the exchange’s own withdrawal systems against it.

The October 29 incident resulted in approximately $6.3 billion in cryptocurrency outflows, according to Binance. Blockchain analytics firms have traced the transfers across multiple networks, making the incident potentially the largest cryptocurrency theft on record. While the investigation remains ongoing, the emerging technical picture raises difficult questions about how exchanges protect the systems that connect internal applications to wallets holding customer assets.

In its October 30 security update, Binance said its initial investigation pointed to a potentially compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. The attacker may have used access from the device to enter an internal service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.

The exchange stressed that it had found no evidence of wallet private keys being leaked. That distinction is important, but it does not necessarily mean the underlying wallet infrastructure remained secure.

Large exchanges typically rely on hot wallets to process customer withdrawals. These wallets are connected to systems that authenticate requests, apply transaction policies and authorize the movement of funds. If an attacker compromises an application or service trusted by that infrastructure, they may be able to initiate malicious transactions without directly extracting the private key.

In other words, protecting the cryptographic key is only one part of wallet security. The systems and identities permitted to use that key are equally important.

Binance has not yet published a complete technical post-mortem, so the laptop compromise remains a preliminary explanation rather than a fully established account of the attack.

Blockchain security firm Blockaid identified a possible mechanism involving Ethereum’s EIP-7702 functionality.

EIP-7702 allows an externally owned Ethereum account to delegate transaction execution to smart-contract code. The feature is designed to support more flexible account functionality, but it also introduces additional considerations when managing authorization and delegated execution.

According to Blockaid’s analysis, the attacker bundled 50 EIP-7702 authorizations into a transaction targeting a Binance hot wallet. One authorization reportedly matched the account’s required nonce, allowing it to be accepted. The account was then delegated to an unverified contract that could execute token and Ether transfers under the attacker’s control.

This reconstruction offers a possible explanation for how the attacker could move funds without obtaining the underlying private key. However, it should not be treated as Binance’s confirmed technical account. The exchange has promised a detailed post-mortem after its investigation and verification process are complete.

TRM Labs traced approximately $6.36 billion in outflows across ten blockchain networks, while Elliptic’s analysis identified approximately $6.43 billion across eleven. The figures differ because the firms used separate tracking methodologies and reporting snapshots.

Elliptic reported that the attacker moved or converted assets across several networks, including Ethereum and Tron. Some stablecoins were exchanged for Ether and TRX, while other funds were moved through decentralized trading and lending platforms.

The ability to freeze certain tokens became a significant factor in the response. Stablecoin issuers can blacklist addresses under their control, while native assets such as Bitcoin and Ether generally cannot be frozen by a central issuer.

The incident highlights a broader weakness in exchange security architecture: a wallet can remain cryptographically protected while the systems authorized to operate it are compromised.

For exchanges, this raises the importance of endpoint security, strict separation of duties, transaction-policy enforcement and independent approval mechanisms. A compromised employee device should not automatically provide a route to high-value withdrawals. Critical transactions require controls that remain effective even when an internal identity or service is compromised.

Binance has revoked the affected address authorization, temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals during security checks, and begun working with blockchain intelligence firms and law enforcement.

The company estimates that approximately $3 billion in affected assets has been frozen and has pledged to cover all losses through its Secure Asset Fund for Users and corporate funds.

The full technical explanation is still missing. Until Binance publishes its post-mortem, the precise entry point, authorization failure and complete sequence of transactions remain subject to investigation. What is already clear, however, is that securing private keys alone is not enough. In a large exchange, every system capable of requesting, approving or executing a transaction is part of the security perimeter.

The record-breaking attack on Binance may not have required hackers to steal a single wallet private key.
